Amy McGrath, a Democrat running for the Senate in Kentucky, earned more than $2.5 million on the first day after announcing her intention to take against Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2018.
The challenge against McConnell was declared by former fighter pilot McGrath, who unsuccessfully ran for the House in 2018. He then launched a media blitz, appearing on numerous cable news channels throughout the day. According to her campaign, the original amount raised was entirely made up of internet contributions, with an average donation of $36. According to the campaign, it was the most money ever raised on the first day of a Senate race.
The first-day fundraising is a reflection of both the Democratic Party’s zeal to make the fight against McConnell competitive and McGrath’s appeal to small-donor voters; she raised more than $8 million for her House campaign last year.
McGrath’s fundraising was first reported by NBC News.
Although McGrath confronts an incredibly difficult task in unseating McConnell in a state that favored President Donald Trump by roughly 30 percentage points in 2016, the Kentucky election is expected to be one of the most costly in the country next year. As the senatorial leader of his party, McConnell has a sizable network of donors. For his most recent reelection campaign in 2014, which he won by 15 percentage points, he raised and spent more than $30 million.
Despite having more than $5.5 million on hand at the end of March, McConnell has not disclosed his fundraising totals for the second quarter of this year. His report is due to the Federal Election Commission on July 15.
