The attack on novelist Salman Rushdie on Friday, according to Rishi Sunak, one of the two contenders for the position of British prime minister, should act as a wake-up call for the West towards Iran, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The attack on Rushdie has received no official government response in Iran, but several conservative Iranian publications have praised the attacker.

According to the newspaper, Sunak, the former finance minister, said that “the horrific stabbing of Salman Rushdie should be a wake-up call for the West, and Iran’s reaction to the incident supports the case for proscribing the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps).

The IRGC is in charge of Iran’s top-tier military and intelligence services.

Sunak stated, “We urgently need a new, strengthened accord and much tougher sanctions, and if we can’t achieve results then we have to start thinking whether the JCPOA is at a dead end,” about stalled negotiations between Iran and the West to resurrect a nuclear deal.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the JCPOA, is the 2015 agreement that allowed Iran to scale back its nuclear program in exchange for relief from U.S., EU, and UN sanctions.

In opposition to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, Sunak remarked, “We cannot take our eyes off the ball elsewhere. The situation in Iran is severe.”

According to polls, Sunak is far behind foreign secretary Liz Truss in the race for the British leadership.
