B e | Scholz: Germany’s Rising Oil and Coal Use Is Temporary

Chancellor Olaf Scholz claims that Germany’s decision to restart coal and oil-fired power plants is simply a temporary solution to the country’s energy problems brought on by the conflict in Ukraine and that his administration is still dedicated to doing “all” it can to address the climate catastrophe.

A/P BERLIN — Chancellor Olaf Scholz claims that Germany’s decision to restart coal and oil-fired power plants is simply a temporary solution to the country’s energy problems brought on by the conflict in Ukraine and that his administration is still dedicated to doing “all” it can to address the climate catastrophe.

Scholz expressed remorse over Germany’s decision to restart 16 idle fossil fuel power plants and extend the operating licenses for an additional 11 amid worries about further Russian natural gas supply disruptions in a video statement on Saturday.

It is bitter that we now need to temporarily use several power plants that we had already shut down due to Russia’s cruel aggression on Ukraine. “But it’s only for a very brief period,”

Scholz emphasized a recent package of measures agreed by parliament to accelerate the development of renewable energy and insisted that Germany is still committed to terminating its greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, the earliest date of any major industrialized country.

We aim to fight the climate issue in every way possible, he declared.

Environmentalists contend that the government might be doing far more to reduce fuel consumption, such as enforcing a universal speed limit and limiting domestic travel options. Recently, major roads in Berlin and the surrounding area were blocked by environmental activists in opposition to proposed new oil and gas developments in the North Sea.

Scholz and the nation’s energy minister, Robert Habeck, have disallowed extending the three remaining nuclear facilities’ operational lives past this year, saying that doing so will not meet Germany’s energy needs.
