(AP) LONDON — A month after the nation’s most disruptive railroad strike in three decades halted train networks throughout the U.K., British rail employees will strike on July 27 over a continuing salary dispute.
A 24-hour strike by members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime, and Transport Workers was announced on Wednesday, threatening travel disruption during the popular summer vacation period.
The conflict over jobs, salary, and working conditions were to be resolved by Network Rail offering a fresh wage raise, according to union leaders. They claimed that accepting the “paltry sum” would require union members to make “dramatic changes in their working lives.”
The general secretary of the union, Mick Lynch, stated that the train operating firms “remain stubborn and are refusing to make any fresh offer which deals with job security and remuneration.”
The only option left to us, he continued, is to go on strike to convey to the training industry and the government that this issue will go on for as long as it takes until a negotiated resolution.
Last month, the union organized three strikes that resulted in 40,000 workers leaving their jobs and disrupting services all around the nation.
It stated that the government’s revised proposal called for a wage increase of 4% this year, 2% the following year, and a further 2% contingent upon reaching “modernization milestones.”
In light of the biggest cost of living crisis in decades and the skyrocketing inflation rate of 9.1%, union officials claim it is not enough.
