India has had many captains across formats after Kohli stepped down from the position in the Test format in January of this year, having already given up his post in T20Is and being ousted from the leadership position in ODIs. Rohit Sharma was selected as the all-format leader.
Jasprit Bumrah, Risbabh Pant, and KL Rahul
In 2022, Team India had several different captains. India has had many captains across formats after Virat Kohli stepped down from the position in the Test format in January of this year. Kohli had previously given up the position in T20Is and been relieved of the leadership position in ODIs. However, veteran cricketer and star of Chennai Super Kings Robin Uthappa has expressed an opinion on who should captain India’s Test and ODI teams.
India has had leaders in KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Shikhar Dhawan, with the BCCI regulating Rohit’s workload across formats. Speaking in an audio chatroom run by CricChat, Uthappa supported Rahul and Pant for ODI cricket while supporting Bumrah for the red-ball skipper position.
“In my opinion, Bumrah would make a fantastic Test cricket captain. KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant will be the options for the ODI, he suggested.
Bumrah has only ever served as captain once in his cricket career, during the fifth Test match between India and England that was postponed and played earlier this month in Birmingham. India has dropped seven wickets in the contest.
India has been led by KL Rahul four times in two different formats. When regular skipper Kohli suffered an injury during the Test series in South Africa, he took over as captain for the match in Johannesburg. He also led India during the Proteas’ three-match ODI series. On the other hand, Pant captained the Indian team during the T20I home series against Temba Bavuma’s team, which resulted in a 2-2 draw.
Even though Rohit was chosen as the captain, the BCCI selectors had already identified the aforementioned three players as potential future leaders for the Indian team.
