(YEREVAN, Armenia) — On Sunday, a powerful explosion at a fireworks storage area ripped through a popular market in Armenia’s capital, killing at least two people, injuring 60 others, and igniting a large fire.
After the early afternoon blast at the Surmalu market, firefighters worked into the night to extinguish the blaze, which sent a towering column of thick smoke over the center of Yerevan. Rescue workers and volunteers searched for victims who might be trapped beneath slabs of concrete and twisted metal amid still-exploding fireworks.
Armen Pambukhchyan, Minister of Emergencies, said the ministry had received 20 reports from people who said they couldn’t find their relatives after the blast. According to the national health ministry, ten people were injured and one person died after being pulled from the rubble.
A woman with an injured leg and a young man who appeared to be unconscious was pulled from the rubble, according to an Associated Press reporter on the scene.
The market, which is located 2 kilometers (over a mile) south of the city center, is well-known for its low prices and wide range of goods.
