Donald trump | Texas polls show Biden defeating Trump

In one of the most unlikely places, Texas, a new poll released on Wednesday indicates danger for President Donald Trump’s chances of winning reelection.

In a general election contest there, according to the Quinnipiac University survey, Joe Biden would defeat by four points (48 percent to 44 percent), a result the ruby red state hasn’t seen in forty years.

Even though Beto O’Rourke and Julián Castro, who are both from Texas, are among the five candidates discovered inside the poll’s margin of error, Biden is the only Democratic presidential candidate to defeat Trump in a head-to-head battle in that state.

Unexpectedly, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren finished second in the state, trailing the president by just 1 point, 46 percent to 45 percent, according to the survey. The mayor of South Bend, Pete Buttigieg, came in second, trailing Trump by only 2 points in a head-to-head contest.

However, the poll indicated that among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters, Biden continues to retain a commanding lead in the primary field with 30% of respondents, followed by 16% for O’Rourke, 15% for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and 11% for Warren.

Castro and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) were far behind with 4 percent each, and Buttigieg was third with 3 percent. In the poll, no other Democrat received more than 2%.

However, as the president continues to struggle in the Rust Belt states that gave him the White House in 2016 (partly because of Biden’s popularity with working-class voters), his campaign has started to look for alternative routes to a second term, including plans to compete in blue states like New Hampshire. Nevada, New Hampshire, and Mexico.

Biden’s strong showing in the Republican stronghold will support O’Rourke’s claim that he is the most electable 2020, Democrat, despite the criticism he has previously received for insisting that Texas and its 38 Electoral College votes may be in play in the election next year.

O’Rourke moves up to second place in the Texas survey, but Democratic voters there would much prefer to see him abandon his White House quest in favor of challenging GOP Sen. John Cornyn, by a margin of over 2-1. O’Rourke has struggled in more recent national and early state polls.
