After Twitter locked Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s account for posting a video making violent threats against him, the presidential campaign of Donald Trump and the major, national Republican campaign committees announced on Thursday that they would stop spending money to advertise on the social media site.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee’s spokesman, Jesse Hunt, said that the unfriendly actions taken by Twitter against Leader McConnell’s campaign were reprehensible and that the organization would not stand for them. “Until further notice, The NRSC will cease all Twitter spending. We won’t invest money in a cause that marginalizes conservatives.
Parker Poling, the executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee, also tweeted that the House campaign arm would follow suit. Richard Walters, the chief of staff of the Republican National Committee, said in a tweet that the RNC and the Trump campaign will not advertise on Twitter “until they address this disgusting bias.”
As a result of Twitter’s “unfair treatment” of McConnell, Senate Leadership Fund president, and CEO Steven Law told POLITICO that the leading pro-GOP super PAC for Senate elections would stop spending money on the social media platform.
The actions follow the Wednesday lockdown of McConnell’s campaign account for sharing a video of demonstrators outside his home that contained death threats against the Kentucky Republican. McConnell’s campaign manager, Kevin Golden, said the campaign unsuccessfully challenged the decision and called Twitter hypocritical. A Twitter spokeswoman said the account was temporarily suspended for breaking the company’s “violent threats policy.”
Republicans, who have long accused Twitter of having a bias against conservatives, have escalated their complaints with the recent reduction in investment on the social media platform. According to POLITICO, the White House is circulating versions of a planned executive order that would address claims that social media companies have an anti-conservative bias.
According to Hunt, the NRSC has only spent a low five-figure sum on Twitter thus far this election cycle. The committee’s decision to stop further spending will be used to generate money. In a fundraising email scheduled to go out from the NRSC on Thursday, donors were asked to “push back.”
The fundraising email referred to McConnell’s account being locked as an “outrageous move” and said that “Silicon Valley is trying to muzzle conservatives.”
