A spokeswoman for Deidre DeJear, a state secretary of state candidate, said the campaign has been in contact with Warren’s staff about a potential visit to support Democrats during a significant get-out-the-vote drive on the state’s six major college campuses next week — or possibly during a subsequent tour of universities before the November midterm elections.
According to DeJear spokesperson Cynthia Serbian-Lander, the Massachusetts Democrat has lately communicated with DeJear’s campaign “primarily by email” about the prospect of a visit, and DeJear’s team is still “hanging out hope” that she will appear.
She did get in touch with Deidre and me a few months ago. In D.C., Deidre and she took a seat, according to Serbian-Lander. “We’ve been asking her to come, but we haven’t received any word on whether or when a trip will take place. They haven’t provided any hints as to what the plan entails.
An inquiry for comment made late on Monday night went unanswered from the Warren campaign.
Beginning this weekend, Senators Kamala Harris of California and Bernie Sanders of Vermont will make separate trips to the state hosting the first presidential election contests. Both have booked meetings with DeJear. New Jersey senator Cory Booker already paid a visit to the region and hosted a fundraiser for DeJear.
DeJear would become the first African-American elected to a statewide position in Iowa if she wins current Republican Secretary of State Paul Pate in the November election.
Warren is under increasing pressure to travel to the first presidential caucus state now that other potential major contenders have emerged.
There has been some on-the-ground dissatisfaction that Warren hasn’t yet shown up to help in Iowa’s local elections, in which a slew of positions are up for election, despite sending a staffer to the state, sending fundraising emails, making a donation to the state Democratic Party, and planning to participate in an upcoming conference call with Iowa Democrats.
According to former Iowa Democratic Party chair Sue Dvorsky, the upcoming midterm elections are possibly the most important of our lifetimes.
Dvorsky disagreed Monday with Warren’s sensational announcement of a DNA test revealing she has Native American ancestry, joining other Democrats in doing so.
If Warren does decide to run for president in 2020, Dvorsky added, “she would do well to get here if this is part of a strategy.” “Some help would be wonderful instead of just that kind of entertainment,”
