Sen. Mitt Romney, a Republican, said on Wednesday that Republicans appeared to lose two Georgia Senate runoff elections because of efforts by President Donald Trump and others to throw doubt on the results of the election in November.
The senator from Utah, a vocal opponent of Trump, told reporters, “It turns out that telling the folks that the election is rigged is not a fantastic strategy to bring out your voters.”
Other Republicans agree with Romney’s opinion, though most haven’t mentioned him by name out of respect for Trump and his devoted supporters.
Raphael Warnock, an Atlanta pastor, defeated Kelly Loeffler in the Senate runoff election on Tuesday. Fellow Democrat Jon Ossoff is now ahead of incumbent David Perdue by more than 15,000 votes. During a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, Romney also criticized a Republican plan to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory. Republicans have been split up by the failed effort to overturn Biden’s victory, which has further established Trump as the chasm in the party.
Members of the president’s family and other associates have sworn to keep a careful check on who remains devoted to Trump, and the president has hinted that he will continue to be involved in Republican politics, including a potential 2024 presidential bid.
