On Sunday, Michael Bennet, a likely Democratic presidential candidate, attacked Joe Biden for making light of the controversy over his sensitive, avuncular approach, which several women said made them uncomfortable.
The Colorado senator said on CNN’s “State of the Union”: “I don’t think anyone should make jokes about it.” Women are speaking up and being able to express when they have been made to feel uncomfortable, whether in a sexual or nonsexual sense, at a crucial point in our nation’s history. On that, people’s opinions ought to be heard.
Numerous women have come forward to claim that Biden inappropriately touched or kissed them. In response, Biden and his supporters have claimed that he is a tactile individual who physically demonstrates affection to everyone, including men, women, and children.
Biden made two jokes about the commotion while speaking to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers on Friday. Biden added that each person had permitted him after hugging a youngster and union president Lonnie Stephenson, drawing chuckles from the audience.
Other Democrats, though, did not laugh. Former Nevada state legislator Lucy Flores, who claimed that Biden kissed her on the back of the head and sniffed her hair, blasted the former vice president for not realizing the gravity of the issue.
Flores said, “Its obvious @JoeBiden hasn’t even really considered how his rude and uninvited touching made women feel uncomfortable.” Making light of something so important as permission diminishes the courageous conversation that women are trying to have all over the world.
The scandal has cast doubt on Biden’s viability as a contender for the presidency in 2020, contributing to the perception that the 76-year-old is out of touch with the evolving Democratic Party. Bennet stated that voters would decide whether or not the controversy should bar Biden from running for president again.
Bennet also talked about his schedule for announcing a run for president. He just received a prostate cancer diagnosis but claimed he has no symptoms and is anxious to start his campaign once the necessary therapy and recuperation have been completed.
