The former vice president stated, “We have to address the underlying causes of all of this.”
Former vice president Joe Biden called for a Department of Justice civil rights probe on Wednesday in response to the “horrific execution” of black man George Floyd, 46, who passed away while in the Minneapolis Police Department’s care earlier this week.
“George Floyd’s life was significant. It was equally important to me. It was as important as anyone else’s in this nation. The presumed Democratic presidential front-runner, Joe Biden, began a virtual meeting with Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf by saying, “At least it should have.”
A bystander captured Floyd’s arrest on camera, showing a cop kneeling on his neck and pinning him to the ground hours before Floyd passed away Monday night. Floyd, who was shackled, complained about his breathing on several occasions before becoming immobile and needing to be placed onto a cart by paramedics.
According to the Associated Press, police claimed that Floyd matched the description of a suspect in a grocery shop counterfeiting case and that he resisted arrest.
On Wednesday, Biden made a comparison between Floyd’s arrest and the 2014 murder of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died after being put in a chokehold by New York City police. Garner’s dying cries of “I can’t breathe” became a rallying cry for rallies against police brutality.
A heartbreaking reminder that this was not an isolated occurrence, but a part of an entrenched, systemic cycle of unfairness that still exists in this nation is watching [Floyd’s] life be taken in the same way, echoing nearly the same words, added Biden.
It sends a very clear message to the black community and to black lives that are constantly in danger, he continued. “It tears at the very heart of our holy idea that all Americans are equal in rights and dignity.
Even though Biden expressed his satisfaction with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s decision to fire the four officers involved in the arrest on Tuesday, he insisted that “they have to be held more fully accountable” about the ongoing FBI investigation into Floyd’s death and his demand for a separate Justice Department investigation.
“We must investigate the cause of everything. Knowing that the Floyd family deserves justice, Biden said, “we must make sure they get it. And as a country, “we have to work tirelessly to erase these systemic failures that inflict so much harm not just on one family, one neighborhood, but also on the people of color all across this country.”
