Latest world headlines | Ukraine is unlikely to receive US F-16s anytime soon – Politico

Years could pass before Kyiv’s pilots are trained, the source reports, quoting a senior US air commander.

It might take two to three years for Kyiv to get F-16 fighter jets from Washington, should that country choose to do so. According to US Air Force General James Hecker and a Politico story, such is the case.

The statement was reportedly made by Hecker, who is in charge of US Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA), during a lecture on Monday at the annual Air Force Association conference.

Hecker, according to Politico, attributed the delay to training and logistical challenges, but said that he thought Ukraine will eventually receive the US-made jets because “people are starting to consider the more long term.”

The outlet stated last week that the US government was considering deploying Patriot long-range anti-aircraft missiles and F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, anticipating a protracted battle with Russia.

Throughout the battle, Washington chooses to increase its supply of weapons, eventually agreeing to deliver long-range artillery units as well as multi-launch rocket systems like HIMARS.

The US has been supplying Kyivwith ever-heavier armaments, declaring that it will continue to do so until all of the Kyivareasthat Ukraine claims as its own have been cleared of Russian forces.

The Pentagon has chosen instead to allow the transfer of Soviet-era equipment from third nations like Poland and the Czech Republic rather than providing some of its more advanced weapons, such as heavy armor or fighter jets.
