Real Madrid’s Sunday La Liga 2022–23 season start came at the ideal time. A defender was bringing down Luka Modric just beyond the penalty area as David Alaba prepared to enter the game from the sidelines.

Just as Alaba was coming off the bench and scoring with his first touch to help Real Madrid rally to a 2-1 victory over promoted Almera, the foul occurred in the 75th minute. The defender claimed that Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti gave him clear instructions.

Alaba recalled, “He told me before I entered the game: Take this free kick, you are going to score. Following the score, he added, “And look, I told you.”

Alaba spoke with the coach before sprinting to the free kick spot and executing a well-placed shot that cleared the wall and struck the post before going in. Ancelotti noted that “he is adept taking free kicks.”
