Nurmagomedov outperforms to claim the title.

Khabib’s cousin Usman Nurmagomedov won the Bellator lightweight championship.

Usman Nurmagomedov dominated Patricky “Pitbull” Freire to win the Bellator lightweight championship in Chicago on Friday night, adding a new chapter to his family’s illustrious fighting legacy.

In a lopsided co-main event match against the Brazilian reigning champion, Nurmagomedov, 24, left little room for doubt. He was awarded 50-45, 50-44, and 50-44 on the scorecards.

Nurmagomedov did his team proud with a performance that arguably had everything except for the finish that some may have felt his dominance deserved. Nurmagomedov was without cousin Khabib in his corner at the Wintrust Arena due to reported visa delays for the UFC icon.

Following the success of Khabib and Islam Makhachev in the UFC lightweight division, Dagestan became well-known as a breeding ground for MMA talent. Usman Nurmagomedov is the first Bellator MMA champion to come from Dagestan.

According to Nurmagomedov, “This is so important to me.” MMA Junkie.

“I’m overjoyed. Many different emotions, you know? Just a quick note of gratitude. Alhamdulillah, first of all, and then

“I get messages from lots of guys and people from all over the world supporting me. I’m grateful.

After the fight, he was embraced by the team, including American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) coach Javier Mendez, while Khabib spoke to a family member via video call.

Nurmagomedov increased his winning streak to 16 wins. The 36-year-old, beaten Freire, suffered his 11th loss in 35 fights, dropping the title he had defeated Peter Queally in Dublin in November of last year.
