Oscars 2022: Twitter Is Furious Because 8 Awards Won’t Be Presented Live

Another award at the Oscars will go to a “fan favorite” movie

Following a rating decline in recent years, the Oscars are currently attempting to regain stability. At the presentation next month, eight awards won’t be given out in person, and a new fan-voted reward will be given out. According to Variety, out of the 23 categories for the 94th Academy Awards, the Oscars for Documentary Short, Film Editing, Hair and Makeup, Original Score, Production Design, Animated Short, Live Action Short, and Sound will be presented off-air and edited into the program. The inclusion of the Oscars Fan Favourite and Oscars Cheer Moment, rewards that will be given based on fan voting via tweets or on a specific website, has added to the criticism of this ceremony’s shortness on social media.

The criticism has grown on Twitter:

The number of people watching the Oscars has been falling precipitously over the past few years; according to news agency AFP, just over 10 million people watched the show last year, which is a 56% decrease from the already historically low numbers of the 2020 edition of Hollywood’s major honors. This year’s “fan favorite” will not be a formal category and will allow fans to vote for films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Bond film No Time To Die, and other money-spinners that received no love when the Oscar nominations were announced earlier this month. In 2018, a proposal to include a “popular film” category to honor mainstream blockbusters was shelved after backlash.

This year’s Oscars will take place on March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, which has hosted them in the past. The pandemic-hit awards ceremony was hosted in a train station the previous year. With twelve nominations, Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is in the first place.
