New Delhi: When it was announced last night that their documentary Writing With Fire had been nominated for an Oscar, filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh leaped around gleefully, hugged one another, and whooped with delight. The filmmakers can be seen watching the Oscar candidates being announced in a video shared by Rintu Thomas, obviously waiting with bated breath. The announcement of Writing With Fire as one of the five nominees for Best Documentary Feature left Rintu, Sushmit, and everyone else watching in awe. “What a God! In the book Writing With Fire, the Dalit women of UP’s Banda district and Bihar’s Sitamarhi district manage Khabar Lahariya, a thriving neighborhood newspaper published in Bundeli, Avadhi, and Bajjika. The journey of the newspaper from print to digital is chronicled in the documentary. The five-year production was directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh.
On the festival circuit, Writing With Fire has already taken home several honors, including two at the Sundance Film Festival. It was selected in December from a pool of 138 films for the Oscars’ 15-film shortlist.
Ascension, Attica, Flee, and Summer of Soul are the other four contenders for Best Documentary Feature (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). The Oscar for Best Documentary Short was previously won by two entries with an Indian setting: Smile Pinki and Period.
