TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — The biggest opposition party in Tunisia’s head was questioned by the nation’s counterterrorism agency on Tuesday over suspicions that he had used an association charity to launder money and fund terrorism.

The length of Rached Ghannouchi’s counterterrorism hearings, which is the 81-year-old leader of the Islamist Ennahdha party, is unknown. Critics think it might result in his arrest or a trial.

Ghannouchi was one of a dozen high-ranking party officials whose bank accounts were frozen by the central bank of the nation of North Africa earlier this month. The claims of money laundering and sponsoring terrorism are vigorously denied by Ennahdha.

All of these allegations, according to Ennahdha, are intended to draw attention away from a referendum Saied is planning on July 25 to amend the constitution to increase the power of the president and lessen that of the parliament and prime minister. Critics of the president claim he is attempting to legitimize a “coup.”

Former Justice Minister Noureddine Bhiri, an Ennahdha figure, attended the hearing on Tuesday and expressed his concern over “a potential detention of Ghannouchi.”

Bhiri was in charge following the 2011 revolution that toppled President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s administration amid demonstrations that sparked the Arab Spring movement.

On its website, the Ennahdha party posted a message allegedly from its president criticizing “the defamation and pranks” of Saied’s administration.

Saved and a few other people contributed to Tunisia’s political crisis last year by blaming Ennahdha. One of the president’s most ardent detractors is Ennahdha, which controlled parliament until it was suspended.
