Russia (AP) — President Vladimir Putin claims that Russia is attempting to establish contacts with the Taliban and that Russia wants to see all of Afghanistan’s ethnic groups participate in the governance of the nation.
Putin made his remarks on Tuesday when speaking with the president of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, during his first travel outside of Russia since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
With a long and porous border with Afghanistan and a Russian military presence there, Tajikistan is concerned that Islamic radicalism could enter its borders.
In the Tajik capital of Dushanbe, Putin declared, “We are doing everything to ensure that the situation there normalizes. “We are making an effort to establish contact with the political forces in charge of the situation.”
We are operating under the assumption that, as has already been said, all ethnic groups in Afghanistan must appropriately participate in the governance of the nation, he added.
Despite being listed as a terrorist organization by Russia, the Taliban have representatives there and sent a delegation to the most recent St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Putin will attend a summit of the presidents of the Caspian Sea littoral republics on Wednesday in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.
