Oscar fever has officially started, as the 94th Academy Awards nominees were unveiled today in New Delhi. With a varied list of nominees that includes names like Will Smith and Denzel Washington for Best Actor, Ryusuke Hamaguchi for Best Director, and others, this year’s list of names is unlikely to be criticized as “Oscars too White.” With 12 nominations, Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog is the most nominated film. It received nods for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch, Best Supporting Actor for Jesse Plemons, and Best Supporting Actress for Kirsten Dunst. Will Smith’s King Richard, which has six nominations, is followed by West Side Story and Belfast with seven each. Dune has ten nominations. At the age of 87, Judi Dench the oldest Best Supporting Actress nominee; is being recognized for her work in Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast. For her portrayal of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story, Ariana DeBose is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Rita Moreno won the Oscar for this role in the 1961 version of the movie.
Writing With Fire, an Indian documentary on female Dalit journalists is up for Best Documentary Feature.
Tracee Ellis Ross, the star of Black-ish, and actor-comedian Leslie Jordan announced the Oscar nominations. Other guests, including actress Phylicia Rashad, wrestler Titus O’Neil, and even a group of firefighters, announced several other honors. The Oscars are set to take place in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27 this year.
The event was held in a Los Angeles railway station without a host the previous year. The Oscars will have a host this year for the first time since 2018, which is another exciting development, according to news agency AFP.
