At the next G20 conference in Japan later this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that he will speak with his American counterpart Donald Trump over Ankara’s acquisition of the Russian S-400 missile defence system. “At the end of the month, I will meet President Donald Trump in Japan. I hope that these issues will be discussed by both parties, “Erdogan stated in a Wednesday televised address, according to the Xinhua news agency. Before the two leaders meeting in Japan, Erdogan also stated that he would like to speak with the US over the phone about the matter.
In a letter to Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar last week, the Pentagon warned that the country would not be allowed to buy F-35 fighter jets if Ankara did not abandon the Russian S-400 missile defence system by July 31. The Russian S-400 missile defence systems have already been purchased by Ankara, the Turkish President asserted, adding that the agreement is final. Erdogan emphasised that Turkey was not just a client but also a production partner who invested over $1 billion in the project while speaking about the US plans to reduce Ankara’s engagement in the F-35 fighter jet programme due to the purchase.
To prevent the Turkish government from moving forward with plans to purchase a Russian S-400 air defence system, the US repeatedly threatened to halt Ankara’s purchase of F-35 fighter fighters, setting off a tense argument between the two NATO members. Washington has already stopped sending parts and providing services necessary for Turkey to receive the expensive jets.
