Imran Khan, the prime minister of Pakistan, has said that during his three-day trip to the US beginning on July 21, he prefers to stay at the embassy’s official home in Washington to a pricey hotel, according to media reports on Monday. While staying at the home of Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan can significantly save the expense of the trip, neither the US Secret Service nor the local government was “particularly open” to the offer, according to Dawn news. As soon as a dignitary arrives in America, the US Secret Service takes over their protection, and the municipal government is responsible for making sure the visit doesn’t cause traffic problems in Washington.

Every year, hundreds of Presidents and Prime Ministers visit Washington, and the US federal government collaborates with the local administration to make sure that their trips don’t disrupt daily life in the nation’s capital. The Ambassador’s house is located in the center of Washington’s diplomatic district, where at least a dozen embassies, including those of India, Turkey, and Japan, are located. During his stay in Washington, a visiting head of state also meets with several US officials, lawmakers, members of the media, and representatives of think tanks, according to Dawn.

Khan must go through Washington’s congested traffic during rush hour to meet his visitors at the Pakistan embassy because his home is too small to accommodate all of these meetings. The majority of these embassies as well as US Vice President Mike Pence’s official residence will need to be passed by his entourage to do this.
