Will Smith on his 10-year Oscars exclusion: “I Accept And Respect The Academy’s Decision”

For the next 10 years, Will Smith cannot attend the Academy Awards.

New Delhi: In a recent interview with Page Six, Will Smith, who has been prohibited from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years, said the following regarding the Academy’s decision: I acknowledge and respect the Academy’s judgment. Two weeks after winning Best Actor shortly after the altercation, Will Smith received a 10-year Oscars attendance ban on Friday. The Academy implemented sanctions action against the King Richard actor who smacked and yelled at Chris Rock, the Oscar presenter after the latter made a joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett. “The Board has decided that Mr. Smith shall not be able to attend any Academy events or activities, in person or digitally, for ten years beginning April 8, 2022,” president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson stated in a letter, according to news agency AFP.

Additionally, during the following ten years, Will Smith will not be allowed to attend any other Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events. The Board’s decision did not include any prohibition on future Oscar nominations or the best actor prize Smith received last month for King Richard, according to news agency AFP.

The incident began when Will Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, was on stage accepting the Best Documentary Feature award when comedian Chris Rock made a joke about her being in “G.I. Jane” because of her shaved head. This incited The Pursuit of Happyness actor, who hit Chris Rock before returning to his seat and yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*****g mouth.” Will Smith later expressed regret to the Academy and his fellow nominees when he accepted the Best Actor award.

A few days ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said that it had begun a “formal review” of the incident and extended an apology to Chris Rock.

Later, in an Instagram post, Will Smith expressed his regret to Chris Rock and claimed that he “I would want to formally apologize to you, Chris, for what I did, and an excerpt from my post mentioned that I was “embarrassed” by what I did. I made a mistake and stepped out of line. I feel ashamed because they did not reflect the kind of man I aspire to be. In a world of love and generosity, violence has no place.”
