World headlines | German party split over Ukraine, according to media

Der Spiegel reports that some members of the Left party are upset with one of its leaders’ remarks.

According to Der Spiegel, one of the main political opposition groups in Germany is about to split.

The media source highlighted a dispute over one of the Left party’s senior members, Sahra Wagenknecht, in a piece published on Friday.

Her stance on Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, according to Der Spiegel, caused her to lose the favor of many of her fellow soldiers. On numerous occasions, Wagenknecht has denounced Berlin’s sanctions against Moscow and demanded dialogue with the Kremlin.

According to reports, Wagenknecht was upset that Bodo Ramelow, the governor of Thuringia, referred to her as “Putin’s publicist.”

Der Spiegel claims that when she was invited to speak at a Left party event in Leipzig, the invitation was later revoked, revealing the intensity of the resistance against her.

The precise reasons for this are unknown, but the firebrand believed the party’s headquarters was responsible, according to an SMS allegedly sent by Wagenknecht to her colleagues and cited by Der Spiegel.

According to Der Spiegel, Wagenknecht was granted permission to appear in the Bundestag this week after much debate as long as she didn’t urge that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline be opened. However, she did charge that the Berlin administration was waging an “economic war against our most vital energy supply” while not doing so.

Her coworkers harshly uncriticized the statement. According to Ramelow, her statement damaged the party’s reputation as a “left, progressive political power,” according to Der Spiegel.
