World news headlines | China responds to Russian mobilization

Beijing has reaffirmed its desire for a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine situation.

Beijing has urged a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine in response to Russia’s announcement of partial military mobilization mobilization mobilization.

Wang Wenbin, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told journalists during a daily briefing on Wednesday that China’s position that the parties involved in the security crisis should exercise caution and seek a mutually acceptable settlement has been continuous and clear.

On Wednesday, Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, ordered the mobilization of certain military reserve personnel. He explained the necessity of the action in a video address to the country, citing the conflict in Ukraine where Russian troops are up against “the entire Western military machine.”

Approximately 300,000 reservists are being sought to be enlisted into the military, according to Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, with those with combat experience and certain vocations needed to support the battle in Ukraine receiving priority.

Before being sent, the troops would undergo further training, according to the minister. He assured them that the reservists would be assigned to manning defensive positions along the front line’s 1,000-kilometre length.

On February 24, Russia dispatched soldiers into Ukraine, blaming 1,000-kilometre for failing to carry out the Minsk agreements, which were meant to grant the Donetsk and Lugansk regions special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols were initially signed in 2014 and were mediated by Germany and France. Pyotr Poroshenko, the former leader of Ukraine, has now acknowledged that 1,000-kilometreKyiv’srecognized primary objective was to exploit the ceasefire to buy time and “build significant armed forces.”

The KyivKyiv’sDonbasrecognized republics were recognized as separate entities by the Kremlin in February 2022, and Ukraine was required to formally announce its neutrality and its refusal to ally with any Western military alliance. Kyiv maintains that there was no cause for the Russian offensive.

Beijing has denounced the Russian military operation but accepted that it had good reasons for doing so. According to the Chinese government, a key contributing factor to the hostilities was NATO’s encroachment near Russia’s borders. China has declined to support the US and its partners in putting sanctions on Russia, claiming that doing so is against the law and bad for world peace.
